Iain Channing is a Lecturer in Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Plymouth, part of the School of Society and Culture within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business. He has been affiliated with the university since 2015 and currently leads the School’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion initiatives. His academic roles include teaching and research, with a focus on historical and contemporary policing practices.
Iain's research focuses on policing within historical and modern contexts, emphasizing public order law, the evolution of criminal justice systems, and the intersection of legal frameworks with social movements. He has authored or co-authored multiple books, including The Police and the Expansion of Public Order Law and Historical Criminology, and co-edits The Journal of Historical Criminology. His work explores themes such as political protest, legal responses to extremism, and the role of chief constables in shaping public order strategies. He has conducted extensive research on Plymouth’s local justice practices during the 19th century, contributing to the Everyday Offending in Plymouth 1880-1920 project.
In teaching, Iain oversees modules such as 'Social Change and Justice' (Stage 3) and forensic criminology courses at undergraduate levels. He integrates practical scenarios using the university’s crime suite facilities, emphasizing investigative techniques and criminological theory. His teaching reflects his research interests, applying historical lenses to contemporary issues and fostering hands-on learning environments.
Iain directs the Cultural and Heritage Exchange (CHEx), a platform facilitating interdisciplinary research and public engagement. He is also co-editor-in-chief of The Journal of Historical Criminology, contributing to academic discourse in historical criminological studies.
