Iain Stainton is a Principal Lecturer at the University of Cumbria’s School of Justice, overseeing Policing, Criminology, Law, and Security programmes. With 32 years of policing experience in investigative and intelligence roles, his teaching bridges theory and practice, informed by his career. He created the Security, Intelligence and Investigative Practice course (2019) and emphasizes real-world simulations like the annual Major Incident Exercise.
His research focuses on criminal investigation methodologies and digital literacy, particularly addressing fake news and digital source credibility. He authored the textbook Criminal Investigation (2021) and frequently engages in media commentary on contemporary events. Beyond academia, he coaches a junior football team, channeling his lifelong Leeds United fandom into community involvement.
