József Hámori was a distinguished Professor of Anatomy at Janus Pannonius University (1989–2002) and served as its Rector (1992–1994). He held prominent roles in Hungarian academia and government, including Vice President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (2002), Chairman of the Hungarian UNESCO Committee (2002), and Minister of National Cultural Heritage (1998–2000). He was a key organizer of the 1st UNESCO World Conference of Science (1999).
His academic career began with a Ph.D. in Comparative Anatomy from Eötvös L. University (1958) and advanced to Doctor of Sciences from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (1972). He served as a Senior Research Fellow and Scientific Adviser at Semmelweis University's Anatomy Department from 1963 onward.
Research interests centered on neurobiology, neuroanatomy, histology, and embryology. His interdisciplinary work bridged anatomical studies with broader scientific policy and education initiatives.
