Dr Huw Marsh is a Senior Lecturer in Twentieth and Twenty-First Century Literature at Queen Mary University of London's School of English and Drama. He holds a BA in American Studies and English from the University of Hull, an MA in Studies in Fiction from the University of East Anglia (UEA), and a PhD from the University of London. His research focuses on post-war and contemporary fiction, with a particular emphasis on comedy, humor, and representations of work. He has authored two monographs: Beryl Bainbridge (2014) and The Comic Turn in Contemporary English Fiction: Who’s Laughing Now? (2020). His teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including modules on narrative theory, comedy in culture, and contemporary literature.
Dr Marsh’s research explores the political and affective dimensions of comedy in literature, examining how comedic elements negotiate themes like labor, genre, and historical representation. His current work investigates comic depictions of work in 21st-century texts. He has contributed to journals such as Textual Practice and Adaptation, and his public engagement includes BBC Radio 4 appearances discussing Beryl Bainbridge’s legacy.
He has taught courses including ESH102 (Reading, Theory and Interpretation), ESH6025 (Laughing Matters: Comedy and Contemporary Culture), and postgraduate modules on textual production and the state of the novel. He supervises doctoral students in areas aligned with his research interests.
