Associate Professor Huw Griffiths is Deputy Head of School (Education) in the Discipline of English and Writing at the University of Sydney. He specializes in sixteenth and seventeenth-century English literature and culture, with a focus on Shakespearean drama, sovereignty, and early modern nationhood. His research also explores contemporary gay fiction and twentieth-century British poetry.
Griffiths teaches widely in early modern literature and poetry. His current research projects include analyzing body parts in Shakespeare’s history plays and examining male-male relationships in Restoration adaptations of Shakespeare. He is affiliated with the Vere Gordon Childe Centre and has supervised students like Mackenzie McCowan and Amanda Yau on topics such as Shakespeare’s textual variations and the abject in Roman plays.
His publications include Shakespeare's Body Parts: Figuring Sovereignty in the History Plays (2020) and Disavowing Authority in the Shakespeare Classroom (2024). He has contributed to The Conversation, reviewing theatre productions and engaging with contemporary adaptations of classic works. Griffiths has secured grants for collaborative projects on early modernity and literary cultures, including a 2019 grant exploring Shakespearean echoes in Scottish-Australian literature.
He frequently appears in media discussions on literary topics, including ABC Radio National’s Self Improvement Wednesday and Drive. His work bridges scholarship and public engagement, emphasizing the relevance of early modern literature to modern cultural debates.
