John Marsh is Professor of English and Director of the Center for American Literary Studies (CALS) at The Pennsylvania State University. His research focuses on American poetry, labor literature, economic inequality, and the cultural impact of the Great Depression. He has authored four books examining poverty in modernist poetry, education myths, Walt Whitman's cultural significance, and emotional responses to economic crises.
His forthcoming works include analyses of wealth in American society through The Great Gatsby and stylistic studies in the age of artificial intelligence. Marsh's research interests span:
- Revisionist histories of poetic modernism
- Economics-literature intersections
- 19th-20th century American poetry
- Pedagogical approaches to inequality
Marsh teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on modern poetry, American literary history, and economic philosophy in literature. He received the 2007-2008 Tillie Olsen Award for his anthology of labor poetry. Current research explores concepts of chance and silence across disciplinary frameworks.
