Henrique Carvalho is a Professor and Co-Director of the Centre for Criminology and Criminal Law Studies (CCLS) at the University of Warwick's School of Law. His research critically examines criminalization, punishment, and justice, focusing on their cultural and socio-political dimensions and their implications for identity, belonging, and authority. His work bridges legal theory, criminology, and socio-political philosophy.
Key publications include The Preventive Turn in Criminal Law (OUP, 2017), shortlisted for the 2018 Hart-SLSA Theory and History Book Prize, and Questioning Punishment (Routledge, 2024), co-authored with Anastasia Chamberlen. He co-edited Decolonizing the Criminal Question: Colonial Legacies, Contemporary Problems (OUP, 2023), which explores colonial influences on modern criminal justice systems. His editorial roles include co-editing Social & Legal Studies and serving on the boards of International Journal of Law in Context and Journal of Critical Realism.
Carvalho’s research interests span punitive justice, decolonial theory, and the emotional dimensions of law. His recent work addresses modern slavery, punitive humanitarianism, and the cultural underpinnings of criminal justice systems.
