George Pavlich is a Professor of Sociology and Law at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Arts, holding the Henry Marshall Tory Chair. He earned BA (Hons.) and MA degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa) and Simon Fraser University (Canada), respectively, and a PhD from the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on socio-legal studies, restorative justice, legal theory, and colonial law's intersections with criminology. Pavlich has authored/co-authored numerous books and articles, including Thresholds of Accusation: Law and Colonial Order in Canada and Criminal Accusation: Political Rationales and Socio-Legal Practices. His work critiques colonial legal frameworks and explores accusatory processes in criminal justice systems.
He teaches courses like SOC 429 (Sociology of Law) and LAW 486 (Jurisprudence), emphasizing theoretical perspectives on law's societal role. Pavlich’s awards include a nomination for the Hart/SLSA Book Prize (2006). His research bridges legal philosophy, historical analysis, and contemporary criminological issues, with a focus on decolonizing legal thought and restorative justice ethics.
