Luiz Dal Santo is a DPhil candidate in Criminology at the University of Oxford’s Centre for Criminology, focusing on mass incarceration dynamics in Brazil during re-democratisation. He holds teaching roles as a Tutor in Criminology at Hertford and St Catherine's Colleges, and has lectured at Oxford Brookes University, the University of Law, and institutions in Brazil. His research explores the political economy of punishment, penal populism, and Southern Criminology. Key contributions include co-editing volumes on 'Southernising Criminology' and 'Punishment in Latin America', and analyzing Brazil’s punitive turn through a peripheral lens.
Education includes a Law degree from Mackenzie Presbyterian University (Brazil), graduate studies in Criminal Law (University of Coimbra), Criminology (University of São Paulo and National University of Litoral), and an MA in Critical Criminology from Padua/Bologna Universities. Awards include grants from the Oxford Law Faculty and Wolfson College.
Research spans penal systems, police violence, and racial dynamics in Brazil. He co-founded the Southernising Criminology Discussion Group and organized international conferences on punishment in global peripheries. Publications include over 20 peer-reviewed articles and a monograph critiquing Brazil’s punitive turn.
His work challenges Northern-centric theories, emphasizing local realities in peripheral states. Current projects include a Special Issue on Colonialism and Penality (2025) and a book exploring Brazil’s punitive policies amid social inclusion.
