Helmut Muller-Sievers is a Professor of Germanic & Slavic Languages & Literature at the University of Colorado Boulder with a courtesy appointment in the Department of English. He holds a MA in German and Latin Literature from Freie Universität Berlin (1985) and a Ph.D. in German and the Humanities from Stanford University (1990). His research focuses on the interrelations between literature, science, and philosophy, particularly in 18th–19th century German texts. He has held professorial roles and leadership positions at Northwestern University, including Director of the Kaplan Center for the Humanities and the Program in Comparative Literary Studies.
His work includes books like Self-Generation: Biology, Literature, Philosophy around 1800 and The Cylinder: Kinematics of the 19th Century, exploring topics such as epigenesis, Romantic-era science, and literary kinematics. Awards include fellowships from the National Humanities Center, Max-Planck-Institute, and Getty Research Institute.
