Prof. Dr. Barbara Thums is a full professor of Modern German Literary History at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, specializing in 18th and 19th century German literature, Environmental Humanities, and Romantic Ecologies. She leads the Mini-Graduate College (MGRK) 'Die ästhetischen Erfindungen der Ökologie um 1800' and previously headed the 'Ethnographien des Selbst in der Gegenwart' project. Her research focuses on ecocriticism, literary theory, and the works of authors like Ilse Aichinger and Friederike Mayröcker.
Education: Studied Germanistik and Geschichte at Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen and Freie Universität Berlin (1985–1993), Magister Artium (1993), PhD (1998), Habilitation (2005). Academic positions include roles at Tübingen and leadership roles at Mainz since 2016. Since 2017, she is a member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature, Mainz.
Research interests span Romanticism, environmental thought, and literary form. She co-edits the journal 'literatur für leser' and organizes international conferences, including the 2025 Kleist Museum conference and workshops on Ilse Aichinger and Romantic Ecocriticism.
Teaching includes courses on 18th-century literature, Idyll theory, and contemporary German authors. Her recent publications explore ecological aesthetics, Romanticism, and modernist poetics.
