Gabriella Safran is the Eva Chernov Lokey Professor of Jewish Studies and Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures at Stanford University, with courtesy appointments in German Studies and Comparative Literature. She serves as Senior Associate Dean of Humanities and Arts and Chair of Graduate Studies in Slavic Languages and Literatures.
Her educational background includes a Ph.D. in Slavic Languages and Literatures from Princeton University (1998) and a B.A. in Soviet and East European Studies from Yale University (1990).
Safran's research centers on Russian and Yiddish literatures, folklore, and Jewish studies within 19th-20th century Eastern European contexts. She investigates historical listening practices, vocal imitation, and cross-cultural exchanges, blending intellectual history with sound and media studies. Current projects explore eldercare depictions in Russian/Yiddish literature and the international pre-history of Jewish humor.
Her publications reveal evolving interdisciplinary trends: Recording Russia (2022) examines ethnographic listening in imperial Russia through sound studies frameworks, The Whole World in a Book (2020) analyzes global literary networks, and Wandering Soul (2010) pioneers biographical scholarship on S. An-sky's revolutionary folklore work.
