Giles Whiteley is a Professor of English Literature at Stockholm University's Department of English. His research focuses on comparative literature, with a particular emphasis on 19th-century British literature, aesthetic movements, and the philosophical underpinnings of literary traditions. He is a member of the Forum Modernism research group, which examines modernist literature and its conceptual foundations.
Whiteley's recent work includes editing Walter Pater's Marius the Epicurean for Oxford University Press' Collected Works series and authoring The Aesthetics of Space in Nineteenth-Century British Literature (2020), which explores spatial representation in works by Ruskin, Dickens, Pater, Wilde, and Henry James. His 2018 monograph Schelling’s Reception in Nineteenth-Century British Literature analyzes the influence of German philosophy on British writers across the Romantic and Victorian periods.
Key research interests include aestheticism, decadence, German philosophy (Schelling, Hegel), French 20th-century thought, and textual editing. He has published widely on figures such as Shakespeare, Dickens, Wilde, and Proust, and serves as editor for Routledge's Literature and Philosophy in Nineteenth-Century Culture series.
