Kyla Bruff is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Carleton University, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Her academic work bridges German Idealism, Critical Theory, and 20th-century French philosophy, with a focus on social and political implications.
- Education: B.A. from Memorial University, M.A. from University of Bonn, PGCE from Kingston University London, and Ph.D. jointly from Memorial University and Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg.
Bruff’s research examines metaphysical commitments and historical roots of contemporary ideologies. She investigates concepts of nature in critical theory through Schelling, Hegel, and Marx, addressing ecological crises, and analyzes populism via Adorno’s critical theory. Her doctoral dissertation was the first English monograph on Schelling’s political philosophy.
Her recent publications explore intersections of German Idealism and poststructuralism, Schelling’s relationship to the Frankfurt School, and metaphysical contingency in phenomenology. Key themes include the state as 'second nature,' ecological philosophy, and aesthetic dimensions of moral education.
Bruff actively engages in applied philosophy through co-directing the ecological NPO For A New Earth (FANE), contributing to climate policy debates in Newfoundland, Labrador, and Sarapiquí, Costa Rica. She hosts public events on ecological impacts of industries and megaprojects, and her op-eds and radio interviews discuss feminism, politics, and ecological issues.
She also serves as Managing Editor of Kabiri: The Official Journal of the North American Schelling Society, Treasurer of the North American Schelling Society, and Co-editor of the Palgrave Schelling Handbook. Her work includes translating Schelling’s lectures into English.
