Dr Ian Bruff is a Senior Lecturer in European Politics at the University of Manchester, based in the Department of Politics. His research focuses on the material and experiential dimensions of living under capitalism, with a particular emphasis on neoliberal thought, authoritarian neoliberalism, and critical methodologies. He has held significant editorial roles, including Managing Editor of the Transforming Capitalism book series (2014–2023) and membership on the Editorial Board of Art & the Public Sphere. His work bridges political economy, social theory, and cultural studies, addressing themes such as resistance movements, gender, and pedagogy.
Bruff’s academic contributions include over 60 publications and active editorial leadership in global political economy. He has supervised numerous PhD students on topics ranging from migrant care infrastructures to neoliberalization in Europe. His teaching spans MA modules on comparative capitalisms and European political crises, alongside undergraduate courses on global political economy. He is also committed to cross-disciplinary collaboration, evident in his supervisory work and contributions to international scholarly networks like the European Sociological Association’s Critical Political Economy Research Network.
His research has been widely recognized, including a 2024 workshop revisiting his seminal 2014 article on authoritarian neoliberalism. Bruff’s work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those addressing inequality and sustainable societies. His pedagogical innovations emphasize sensorial and embodied learning, reflecting his broader commitment to politicizing knowledge production.
