Dr Helen Zhang serves as Senior Lecturer in Accounting and Finance at the Faculty of Business and Law, University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), where she leads the Accounting and Finance top-up programme and Business Management with Accounting and Finance programme. Previously, she held a Lecturer position in Accounting and Finance at Xi'an Jiaotong & Liverpool University.
Her academic foundation includes a PhD in Accounting and Finance from the University of Exeter Business School.
Dr Zhang's research centers on Foreign Direct Investment dynamics in China, particularly examining tax incentive structures and their impact on foreign capital flows. She actively investigates small business growth trajectories and governmental frameworks influencing entrepreneurial finance, with significant emphasis on UK-based SME resilience during economic crises. Her work bridges policy analysis with empirical finance, focusing on how fiscal instruments shape business ecosystems.
Publication trends reveal an evolution from China-focused FDI studies toward broader analyses of UK SME financing, credit accessibility, and innovation policy. Recent works increasingly address post-crisis recovery mechanisms, technological adoption in international expansion, and R&D incentive structures, reflecting a strategic shift toward policy-relevant economic interventions.
In her capacity as Programme Leader, Dr Zhang provides academic oversight for two undergraduate programmes. Her extensive journal publications in high-impact outlets like Small Business Economics and International Small Business Journal demonstrate sustained research productivity despite no explicitly mentioned grant funding.
