Helen Rutherford is an Associate Professor in the Law Department at Northumbria University. She holds a PhD in Legal History from Newcastle University and is a qualified solicitor with extensive legal practice experience. She teaches Civil Litigation, Legal History, and Inquests, and leads the Law Foundation Year programme.
Holding multiple academic credentials, including an MA in History (Newcastle University, 2005) and PGCHE (Northumbria University, 2015), she is a Fellow of the HEA and the Society for Education and Training. Her research focuses on 19th-century legal history, particularly coroners, inquests, and forensic practices in the North East of England.
Her work includes projects such as the Newcastle Gaol Project and collaborative initiatives like the Through a Legal Lens seminar series. Notable publications explore legal history through case studies, art installations, and forensic investigations. Awards include being long-listed for the OUP Law Teacher of the Year and holding prestigious fellowships.
