Dr Hefin Gwilym is a Lecturer in Social Policy at Bangor University, where he has worked since 2006. He holds a BA and MA in Politics from Swansea University and a doctorate in Social Sciences from Keele University. His teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Social Policy, including courses on poverty, housing policy, health policies, and key social policy issues. He actively supervises PhD students and welcomes research proposals in his areas of expertise.
Dr Gwilym’s research focuses on social welfare systems, austerity policies, food security, and the political dimensions of social work. Notable contributions include analyses of food bank proliferation in Wales, critiques of austerity measures, and advocacy for Universal Basic Income (UBI). He has provided expert evidence to Welsh parliamentary committees on benefits systems and authored influential works such as Social Policy for Welfare Practice in Wales (3rd ed., 2021). His work bridges academic inquiry with policy advocacy, addressing real-world challenges like poverty, inequality, and the impact of neoliberal reforms.
Dr Gwilym has contributed to policy debates through submissions to Senedd Cymru and publications in venues like Policy Press and Journal of Poverty and Social Justice. His roles as Pastoral Lead for Year 2 students and Work Placement Module Coordinator reflect his commitment to both academic rigor and student support.
