Harvey Young is a Professor and Dean of the College of Fine Arts at Boston University. Previously, he held a Professorship and chaired the Theatre department at Northwestern University, with additional appointments in African American Studies, Performance Studies, and Radio/TV/Film. His research explores race, performance, and cultural memory, with notable works like Embodying Black Experience (awarded Book of the Year) and Black Theater is Black Life. Educated at Yale (BA), SUNY Buffalo (MA), and Cornell (PhD), he has been a Harvard and Stanford fellow. He currently leads the College of Fine Arts and serves as President of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education.
His research interests center on Black performance theory, racial dynamics in theatre, and the intersection of art with historical and social justice issues. Articles frequently address topics like directorial legacies, migration narratives, and the role of performance in addressing systemic inequities. His work has been featured in New Yorker, Wall Street Journal, and media outlets like CNN and Al Jazeera.
Professional contributions include board roles with the African American Arts Alliance, Northlight Theatre, and Yale Club of Chicago.
