Denise Joy Hart is a Professor and Coordinator of Playwriting & Scriptwriting at Howard University's Department of Theatre Arts within the College of Fine Arts. Specializing in African American Theatre, TV Scriptwriting, and Dramaturgy, her work explores intersections of race, class, and identity through cultural memory and family narratives.
- Education: MFA in Playwriting from Sarah Lawrence College (1999), BFA in Acting from Howard University (1996) with professional training in TV scriptwriting and comedy writing
- Research: Decolonizing theatrical curricula, preserving Black theatre history via digital archives, and creating safe spaces for BIPOC playwrights
- Notable Recognition: Recipient of the 2024 Chadwick A. Boseman Full Professor Award, 2021 Provost's Distinguished Service Award, and 2018 Outstanding Associate Professor recognition
Her 2023-2024 play development projects through the Play Development Lab demonstrate commitment to advancing Black women's voices in theatre. Awards include multiple festival recognitions and an Emmy nomination for Blackademics TV work. She has mentored students who now excel in film, television, and theatre professions.
As a dramaturge, she has contributed to productions at Ford's Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre, and Hattiloo Theatre. Her 2022-2023 TV scriptwriting intensive in Georgia and Amazon Studios partnership highlight industry engagement. Current projects include a chapter on Black Power movement impacts on theatre curricula and a television drama pilot exploring academic politics.
