Dr. Hannah Durand is a Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Stirling, specializing in health psychology with a focus on chronic illness self-management and menstrual health. She joined the University of Stirling in 2021 after completing her education and postdoctoral work at the National University of Ireland, Galway.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD in Health Psychology from National University of Ireland, Galway (2018)
- Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education from University College Cork
- Undergraduate and graduate training at National University of Ireland, Galway
Dr. Durand's research focuses on chronic illness self- and shared-management behaviors across the lifespan, with particular emphasis on medication adherence, pain management, and menstrual health issues. Her work spans multiple populations including adolescents with juvenile idiopathic arthritis, patients with treatment-resistant hypertension, and individuals experiencing menstrual pain. She has developed a strong research interest in menstrual health literacy and appropriate help-seeking behaviors for gynecological issues.
Her recent publications demonstrate a clear trajectory toward women's health issues, particularly menstrual pain and vulvodynia, while maintaining her earlier work on medication adherence in chronic conditions. This represents a strategic expansion of her research program from general chronic illness management to specialized women's health concerns.
Dr. Durand has received numerous prestigious awards recognizing her contributions to health psychology:
- Early Career Award of the International Society of Behavioral Medicine (2018)
- Herman Schaalma Award from the European Health Psychology Society (2020)
- Pain Research Medal from the Irish Pain Society (awarded twice, in 2015 and 2020)
- Hannah McGee Early Career Excellence in Research/Practice Award (2023)
As an active researcher and educator, Dr. Durand is committed to advancing health psychology through improved research methods and supporting early career researchers. She serves on several committees including the European Health Psychology Society's Synergy Board, Special Interest Groups Leading Committee, and Ari Haukkala Mentoring Programme Task and Finish Group. Her research on adherence to physical distancing measures during the COVID-19 pandemic directly informed Irish policy development.
Dr. Durand maintains active involvement in multiple research communities through her membership in the International Society of Behavioural Medicine, European Health Psychology Society, Irish Pain Society, Psychological Society Ireland, and British Psychological Society.
