Professor Hanna Liss is Chair of Bible and Jewish Biblical Interpretation at the Heidelberg University of Jewish Studies since 2003. She is also a co-opted Member of the Faculty of Philosophy at Heidelberg University. Her academic career spans over two decades with significant contributions to Jewish biblical studies, Masorah research, and medieval Jewish scholarship.
Professor Liss's research interests focus on Jewish Biblical Interpretation, Masorah Studies, Medieval Jewish Studies, Hebrew Bible Scholarship, and Jewish Theological Thought. Her work explores the intricate relationship between textual transmission, cultural context, and religious interpretation in Jewish tradition, particularly examining how medieval Jewish scholars engaged with biblical texts through philological, aesthetic, and pedagogical lenses. She has made significant contributions to understanding Masoretic traditions, Hebrew-French linguistic exchanges, and the visual representation of biblical texts in medieval manuscripts.
Her recent scholarly output demonstrates a clear trend toward interdisciplinary research that bridges textual analysis, cultural history, and visual studies. The 15 most recent publications reveal her deep engagement with Masoretic traditions, particularly examining how medieval Jewish scholars transmitted and interpreted biblical texts through innovative visual and textual formats. Her work increasingly focuses on the intersection of language, culture, and religious practice in medieval Jewish communities, with special attention to Hebrew-French linguistic exchanges and the pedagogical dimensions of biblical interpretation.
