Gunther Oestmann is an Associate Professor of the History of Science at the Technical University of Berlin's Faculty I - Humanities and Educational Sciences. He specializes in the history of scientific instruments, clocks, astronomy, and navigation. His career includes roles as a watchmaker apprentice (1979–82), art historian (MA 1990, PhD 1992), and curator at institutions like the Deutsches Museum (2006–2008). He has held visiting professorships and served as a private lecturer since 2010. His research focuses on the intersection of craft, science, and culture, with notable projects like the ARS MECHANICA restoration initiative and the Gerda Henkel Foundation-funded study on 19th-century nautical education. Key awards include the Prix Gaïa (2013) and Dr. Alan Shenton Award (2015). He teaches courses on astronomical clocks, navigation history, and instrument design, and publishes extensively on topics ranging from medieval astrolabes to chronometer technology. His current work explores early modern astrological practices and the material culture of scientific instruments.
