Guillermo C. BAZAN is a Professor and Provost’s Chair Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the National University of Singapore (NUS). His research focuses on organic optoelectronic materials, bioelectronic interfaces, and advanced catalysts. He holds a B.Sc.(Hons) from the University of Ottawa (1986), a Ph.D. from MIT (1991), and completed postdoctoral studies at Caltech (1990–1992).
His work spans synthesis of organic molecules for optoelectronic applications, transmembrane agents for bioelectronics, and design of novel antibiotics. He has received numerous accolades, including Fellowships from the Royal Society of Chemistry and AAAS, and awards such as the American Chemical Society Cope Scholar Award (2006) and Bessel Award (2005).
Recent research emphasizes nonfullerene acceptors for photovoltaics, conjugated oligoelectrolytes for biocatalysis, and flexible thermoelectric generators. His articles (2018) highlight advancements in near-infrared optoelectronics, nanowire-based energy systems, and ultraflexible biosensors.
- Awards: Over 20 honors including “Most Influential Scientific Minds” (Thomson Reuters, 2015) and recognition as an ISI Highly Cited Scientist (2017).
- Grants/Advising: Extensive funding history via NSF, Dreyfus, and Humboldt Foundation awards; no specific students listed.
Labs/Teams: Active in NUS chemistry labs developing bioelectronic materials and advanced organic semiconductors. Future work includes next-gen optoelectronic devices and antibiotic innovation.
