Gretchen Geraets is a part-time Lecturer (0.4) in the Department of Photography at Norwich University of the Arts, UK. She holds a BA (Hons) in Photography from Auckland University of Technology (2001) and an MFA in Fine Art (Distinction) from Goldsmiths, University of London (2014). Her teaching emphasizes practical experience, industry context, and fostering students' creative identity. As an interdisciplinary visual artist, her practice spans sculpture, photography, installation, and performance, exploring themes like bodily dissociation, absence, and recall. Her research project 'Mother lode', supported by an Elephant Trust Grant, investigates motherhood's productivity through photography, sculpture, and writing. She also explores bronze casting with personal narratives, funded by an Arts Council England DYCP grant.
Her career includes co-founding artist-run spaces Canary Gallery (Auckland) and g&A studios (Sydney). Notable exhibitions include 'Mother lode' (2023), 'gm' (visual essay at University of Birmingham), and works like waiting time, self, and OTHERWAY. Residencies include Kunstort ELEVEN (Germany), LoBe (Berlin), and Joya: arte + ecología (Spain). She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and member of the Association of Photographers’ Education Working Group.
