Dominique Rey is an Associate Professor at the School of Art, University of Manitoba, specializing in multidisciplinary artistic practices. Her work spans photography, video, performance, collage, and sculpture, exploring peripheral subjectivities and the construction of self through fragmentation and recontextualization.
Educational background includes:
- MFA in New Media, Transart Institute, Donau University Krems (2009–2011)
- MFA in Photography, Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, Bard College (2004–2007)
- Summer School of Music & Art, Yale University (1999)
- B.F.A. Honors, University of Manitoba (1994–1999)
Her research investigates the tension between photography and sculpture through "photographic objects," where two-dimensional imagery is reinterpreted into three-dimensional forms. Current projects like Mother/Ground examine early motherhood's transformations through performative imagery that blurs corporeal and psychic boundaries between mother and child. Rey's work consistently engages with dislocation, disorientation, and the "outsider within" societal frameworks, utilizing fragmentation to explore self-construction in contemporary contexts.
Notable recognitions include the Sobey Art Award Long List (2011), National Magazine Award Gold Medal (2005), and multiple Canada Council and Manitoba Arts Council grants. Her work features in permanent collections including the National Gallery of Canada and Winnipeg Art Gallery.
Rey has received substantial research funding including Canada Council Research and Creation Grants (2018), Manitoba Arts Council Visual Arts A Grants (2017, 2015, 2013), and international residencies at La Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris (2016). Her creative practice integrates academic inquiry through artist residencies and public art projects like MELT at The Forks (2017).
Her studio practice operates at the intersection of teaching and creation, with significant contributions to prairie art discourse through exhibitions, screenings, and collaborative projects examining landscape, identity, and materiality.
