Gretchen Alterowitz serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Dance at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she teaches across theoretical and practical domains including ballet technique, choreography, dance writing, and dance studies.
Her educational background includes an MFA in Dance from the University of Iowa.
Alterowitz's research centers on feminist, queer, and democratic approaches to dancemaking and performance, with significant contributions to contemporary ballet discourse. Her work explores:
