Alison Bory serves as Chair & Associate Professor of Dance at Davidson College, holding the E. Craig Wall, Jr., Distinguished Teaching Professorship in the Humanities and directing the Humanities Program. She maintains joint appointments in the Dance, Gender and Sexuality Studies, and Humanities departments.
Her educational background includes:
- Ph.D. and M.F.A. from University of California, Riverside
- M.A. from University of Surrey
- B.A. from Mount Holyoke College
Dr. Bory's research investigates contemporary autobiographical performance forms and dance languages' capacity to re-imagine identity creation and subjectivity. Her work critically engages queer representational strategies, as seen in current analyses of Miguel Gutierrez's Age & Beauty, and explores "difficult dance" performances that utilize discomfort to comment on societal issues. This interdisciplinary scholarship bridges performance theory, identity politics, and embodied practice.
As co-founder of AGA Collaborative (with Gretchen Alterowitz and Amanda Hamp), she produces experimental dance research presented at venues including Gibney Dance (NYC), Dance Complex (Cambridge), and international institutions like Coventry University and Queen's University Belfast. Her choreography has been featured at Dance New Amsterdam, Judson Memorial Church, and major festivals across the U.S.
