Dr. Greg Sullivan is an Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of History of Art at the University of York until 2024. He specializes in British sculpture from the late 17th to mid-19th centuries, with a focus on historical intersections between art, geology, and scientific thought. His current project, Pantheons: Sculpture at St Paul’s Cathedral, involves cataloging monumental sculptures erected between 1795 and 1916.
Education: BA (Leeds), MA (Warwick), PhD (Leeds).
Research interests include:
- Francis Chantrey’s sculptural practices and legacy
- Materiality and symbolism in sculpture
- Art’s relationship with historical and geological narratives
- Colonial and transnational sculptural networks
His articles explore themes like plaster modeling techniques, the geological context of sculpture, and public art’s political dimensions. He co-edits the online Biographical Dictionary of Sculptors in Britain 1660–1851 and has curated major exhibitions at Tate Britain and the Ashmolean Museum.
Professional roles include steering committees for Art UK’s sculpture digitization project and the Prehistories of the Installation project at Pompeu Fabra University. He has held fellowships at Oxford’s Lincoln College and the Paul Mellon Centre.
