Her research explores uncertainty and flux in artistic process, emphasizing transformative material practices, ecological themes, and sculptural responses to plant life, cellular structures, and environmental change. She frequently employs repurposed materials like electrical waste and cardboard to investigate generative processes and new meanings. Her work is inspired by botanical forms, energy systems, and futuristic human-plant hybridity, often incorporating body architecture and ritualistic symbolism.
Deborah Gardner’s artistic practice is deeply intertwined with science collaboration, supported by funding from the Zoological Society of London, the Biochemical Society, and the Integrated Biological Imaging Network (KCL). Her exhibitions span galleries, museums, cemeteries, and public spaces across the UK and internationally. Recent and upcoming projects include Plant Power (Groundwork Gallery), Phantasmagoria (Tension Fine Art Gallery), and Threads of Resilience (Dalgart Residency, Romania). She is currently leading the research project Re-enchantment: The legacy of folklore in future imaginings, funded by the Horizon Network for Time at the University of Leeds.
