Deborah Jackson is a Senior Lecturer and Head of Fine Art Critical Studies (FACS) at the Glasgow School of Art's School of Fine Art. She previously held leadership roles at Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh, including Director of Visual Culture (2017-22) and Director of Postgraduate Research (2019-22).
- PhD and MSc in Contemporary Art Theory & Practice (University of Edinburgh)
- BA (Hons) in Fine Art Sculpture (Glasgow School of Art)
Her research examines how cultural institutions and artistic practices are shaped by power structures and institutional systems. She supervises postgraduate researchers in areas including Contemporary Art Theory & Practice, Class, Feminism, and Artist-run culture.
Deborah has served as External Examiner for the University of Reading's MA Fine Art (2020-24) and University of Glasgow's Art History/Visual Arts Studies (2019-23). She co-led the Scottish Graduate School for Arts & Humanities' Creative Art and Design Catalyst and contributed to the National Association for Fine Art Education's Steering Committee.
As co-Director of Edinburgh's Embassy Gallery (2006-09) and a board member for Glasgow's CCA, Market Gallery (Chair of Board of Trustees), and Edinburgh Arts Festival, she actively engages with professional arts communities. She has participated in selection panels for Collective Gallery, Talbot Rice Gallery, and National Galleries of Scotland residencies.
