Dr. Wenny Teo is a Senior Lecturer in Modern and Contemporary Art at The Courtauld Institute of Art, specializing in Chinese and diasporic art within transnational contexts. She holds a PhD from UCL and is an FHEA. Prior to her academic role, she curated at institutions like Tate Modern and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai. Her research explores critical geopolitics, decolonialism, and the intersections of art with infrastructure, ecology, and migration.
Education: BA (York), MA/PhD (UCL).
Research focuses on contemporary Chinese art’s engagement with global politics, including the ‘Chinese Dream,’ digital practices, and transcultural narratives. Current projects include a monograph on sculptor Kim Lim, challenging reductive stereotypes of Asian art. Her work also addresses surveillance, labor, and gender through artists’ responses to socio-political issues.
Awards include the Paul Mellon Mid-career Fellowship (2020) for her Lim project. She supervises PhD students exploring topics like bio-art, queer art, and visual rhetoric in wartime Japan.
Curatorial highlights include A Beautiful Disorder (2016) and the 8th Shenzhen Sculpture Biennial (2014). She serves on editorial boards for Oxford Art Journal and Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art.
