Greg Cavazos is an Assistant Professor of Practice in Music and Human Learning at the University of Texas at Austin’s College of Fine Arts. His career spans nearly two decades in music education and performance, with key roles as a mariachi director at Eagle Pass High School, Cavazos Middle School, and Lubbock High School. He directed Mariachi Javelina at Texas A&M University-Kingsville and led trumpet instruction at Texas Tech University’s Mariachi Camp (2015–2019). He evaluates mariachi ensembles for the Texas Music Adjudicators Association and has collaborated with artists like George Strait and Jimmy Gonzales.

His research focuses on the evolution of mariachi trumpet within Son Jalisciense, as explored in his thesis. Teaching & Leadership: He advises the Mariachi program at UT Austin and has mentored students across Texas. His work emphasizes bridging music performance with pedagogical innovation.
