Xavier Fonoll Almansa is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, part of the College of Engineering. His expertise lies in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering, focusing on innovative solutions for waste management and resource recovery. He holds a Ph.D. in Engineering and Advanced Technologies from the University of Barcelona (2015), an M.S. in Environmental Engineering (2012), and a B.Eng. in Chemical Engineering (2011), also from the University of Barcelona.
His research interests include microbial community engineering, decentralized sanitation systems, and resource recovery from waste streams. He explores technologies such as anaerobic digestion, hydrothermal liquefaction, and advanced membrane bioreactors to address challenges in sustainable waste treatment and energy production. Notable projects involve simulating rumen conditions to enhance lignocellulosic biomass hydrolysis and studying the fate of PFAS in wastewater treatment systems.
Dr. Almansa’s work integrates technoeconomic analysis with environmental lifecycle assessments to evaluate renewable energy systems and waste-to-energy strategies. He contributes to advancing global sanitation solutions through anaerobic digestion scaling and decentralized infrastructure development.
