Dr. Cigdem Eskicioglu is a Professor and NSERC/Metro Vancouver Industrial Research Chair (IRC) in the School of Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC), specializing in wastewater and sludge treatment. She is the Founder and Leader of the Bioreactor Technology Group (BTG), which operates three state-of-the-art laboratory facilities at UBC's Okanagan Campus focused on advanced wastewater treatment processes for efficient contaminant removal, energy conservation, resource recovery, and mitigation of trace contaminants of emerging concern.
Dr. Eskicioglu's educational background includes:
- Postdoctoral studies in Environmental Engineering (University of Ottawa)
- PhD in Environmental Engineering (University of Ottawa)
- BSc in Environmental Engineering (Istanbul Technical University)
Her research program centers on developing innovative pretreatment technologies coupled with anaerobic digestion for converting organic residues from municipal, industrial, and agricultural sources into bio-methane and bio-hydrogen. She addresses critical challenges in reducing operational risks and intensifying resource recovery in wastewater treatment facilities, with particular expertise in hydrothermal liquefaction, emerging contaminants, and nutrient recovery processes. Her work bridges fundamental research with practical applications for wastewater utilities seeking more sustainable and efficient treatment processes.
Dr. Eskicioglu's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on hydrothermal liquefaction integration, aqueous phase treatment, and nanomaterial-enhanced digestion processes. Her research has evolved toward comprehensive risk assessment of emerging technologies while optimizing resource recovery pathways from municipal sludge streams.
Her significant contributions have been recognized through numerous prestigious awards:
- UBC Okanagan's Researcher of the Year Award (2020)
- UBC's Royal Society of Canada College of New Scholars Recognition (2020)
- School of Engineering's Outstanding Researcher Award (2017)
- BC CUFA Early Career Award (2012)
- City of Kelowna's Mayor's Environmental Award (2011)
As the NSERC/Metro Vancouver Industrial Research Chair, Dr. Eskicioglu leads collaborative research initiatives with significant funding to develop viable bioreactor configurations that reduce effluent toxicity risks and increase net energy yields from solids stream treatment. Her work directly impacts municipal wastewater treatment practices and contributes to sustainable resource management solutions.
Dr. Eskicioglu's Bioreactor Technology Group operates specialized facilities including Advanced Anaerobic Digestion, Particle Sizing/Imaging, and TCEC Detection laboratories, supporting cutting-edge research on advanced wastewater treatment processes and emerging contaminant mitigation.
