University of Michigan-Ann Arborمعرفی
Lutgarde Raskin is the Altarum/ERIM Russell O'Neal Professor in the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan. She holds a PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and dual degrees (BS and MS) in Environmental Science and Engineering from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium.
- PhD, Environmental Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
- BS, Economic Sciences, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven
- BS + MS, Environmental Science and Engineering, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven
Her research focuses on biological water and wastewater treatment processes, including anaerobic digestion, activated sludge systems, and membrane bioreactors. She investigates microbial ecology in treatment systems, antimicrobial resistance, and sustainable solutions for food processing/agricultural waste streams. Recent work emphasizes the drinking water exposome, opportunistic pathogens, and resource recovery from organic waste.
Her scientific contributions include a 2025 Emerging Investigator Series editorial on microbiome integration in urban water systems and 2024 advancements in autonomous flushing protocols for plumbing. She also developed an open-source anaerobic digestion modeling platform (ADM1F) for optimizing biogas recovery.

Professor Raskin's work bridges environmental engineering and microbiology, with a focus on public health implications of water systems. She leads research on nontuberculous mycobacteria and arsenic mitigation, collaborating with teams on projects like rumen-inspired bioreactors and microbial risk assessments.
