Grace M. Cho is a Professor in the Sociology-Anthropology Department at the City University of New York (CUNY). She holds a BA from Brown University, an MEd from Harvard University, and a PhD from the CUNY Graduate Center. Her research bridges sociology, gender studies, and trauma studies, focusing on transgenerational haunting, US militarism, and mental health within marginalized communities. She is the author of Tastes Like War (2021), a National Book Award finalist and winner of the 2022 Asian Pacific American Literature Award, and Haunting the Korean Diaspora (2008), which won the 2010 ASA Asia & Asian America Section Book Award. Her work also includes co-editing The Children of the People (2022). Dr. Cho’s scholarship is complemented by media appearances on NPR, BBC, and Vogue Korea.
Her research interests explore the intersection of personal narrative and sociopolitical trauma, particularly how historical violence impacts diasporic communities. She advocates for decolonizing mental health care and critiques systemic structures like carceral states and racial capitalism. Her writings blend academic rigor with creative nonfiction, addressing topics such as schizophrenia, anti-Asian violence, and the legacies of U.S. military occupation in Korea.
