Hwisang Cho is an Associate Professor at Emory University's Department of History, affiliated with the Laney Graduate School. He specializes in Korean cultural, intellectual, and literary history with a focus on textual media and global written culture. His research explores epistolary practices in Chosŏn Korea, Confucian storytelling traditions, and the intersection of material culture with intellectual history.
Cho holds a B.A. in Chinese Literature from Korea University (2001) and a Ph.D. in Korean History from Columbia University (2010). He teaches courses on Korean history, East Asian textual media, and global epistolary culture. His landmark book The Power of the Brush: Epistolary Practices in Chosŏn Korea (2020) has received prestigious accolades including ACLS Open Access Book Prize nomination and MLA First Book Prize recognition.
His current project, Irresistible Fabulation, reinterprets Korean Confucian tradition through narratological and anthropological lenses. Cho actively contributes to academic communities as a senior fellow at the Andrew W. Mellon Society of Fellows in Critical Bibliography (SoFCB) and executive committee member of the Korean Literature Association (KLA).
Cho's research spans diverse topics including scribal practices, funerary texts, and vernacular literacy. His work bridges historical analysis with innovative methodologies like 'critical fabulation,' emphasizing storytelling's role in shaping cultural identities.
