Grace M. Cho is Associate Professor of Sociology and Anthropology at the College of Staten Island, City University of New York (CUNY), where she bridges academic rigor with public engagement through innovative interdisciplinary scholarship. Her work critically examines Korean diasporic experiences, memory politics, and food sovereignty through hybrid methodological frameworks.
Education
- PhD in Sociology and Women’s Studies, CUNY Graduate Center (2005)
- MEd, Harvard School of Education
Professor Cho’s research pioneers intersections of autoethnography, performance art, and sociological analysis to investigate intergenerational trauma, particularly through Korean War legacies and mental health narratives. Her food studies work examines culinary practices as sites of resistance and cultural memory, while her transpacific critique challenges Western epistemological frameworks in Asian American studies. This scholarship manifests in both academic publications and community-based performance projects that center marginalized voices.
Scientific Recognition
- 2010 American Sociological Association Book Award for methodological innovation in 'Haunting the Korean Diaspora'
- 2021 National Book Award Finalist (Nonfiction) for 'Tastes Like War'
- 2022 Asian Pacific American Literature Award for Adult Nonfiction
Through CUNY’s PublicsLab and Center for the Study of Women and Society, Professor Cho advances public scholarship models that transform academic research into community resources. Her 'Children of the People' initiative and collaborative art projects demonstrate sustained commitment to making scholarship accessible beyond traditional academic boundaries while maintaining rigorous theoretical engagement.
