Professor Grace James is a Professor at the University of Reading’s Reading Law School, where she has been since 2002. She holds a PhD from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth (1999) and has been a Research Fellow there. As Academic Lead, her work focuses on Work-Family Reconciliation Policies, Gender and Employment, Discrimination Law, and Workplace Mental Health Regulation. She teaches Contract Law and convenes the Employment Law module.
Her research explores intersections between work and family life, including pregnancy discrimination, menopausal worker rights, and caregiver obligations. Notable grants include Nuffield Foundation funding for pregnancy-related litigation studies (2007) and AHRC support for work-family policy networks (2010). She contributed to the Families And Work Network (FAWN) with Professor Nicole Busby and co-edited a seminal 2011 volume on 21st-century labour law challenges.
Recent publications include a 2025 report on maternal wellbeing and return-to-work decisions and a 2024 analysis of menopausal worker rights. Her articles frequently address EU employment law, mental health accommodations, and caregiving legal frameworks. She serves on the ESRC Peer Review College and is a qualified Executive Coach (since 2023).
