Dr Gizachew Tessema serves as an Associate Professor at Curtin University's School of Population Health and holds an adjunct position at the University of Adelaide. An emerging leader in perinatal and reproductive epidemiology, his research employs advanced statistical methods, mixed methods research, and qualitative designs to improve maternal and child health outcomes.
Education:
- PhD in Public Health, University of Adelaide (2018), awarded Dean’s Commendation for Doctoral Thesis Excellence
His research focuses on perinatal epidemiology and health services, utilizing large-scale birth registry data from over 11 million births across Australia, Norway, Finland, and the United States. He pioneered studies on interpregnancy intervals and adverse perinatal outcomes, with current work developing risk prediction models to prevent avoidable complications in Australian maternity care. His methodological expertise bridges quantitative and qualitative approaches to address critical gaps in reproductive health services.

He maintains strong international collaborations, notably through his Gro Harlem Brundtland Visiting Fellowship at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health's Centre for Fertility and Health.
