Associate Professor Gizachew Tessema is a teaching and research academic at Curtin University's School of Population Health within the Faculty of Health Sciences. He serves as co-head of the Epidemiology Research Lab and holds an adjunct Senior Lecturer position at the University of Adelaide's School of Public Health. With over 150 journal articles published in high-impact journals including The Lancet Global Health, PLOS Medicine, and BMJ Global Health, his scholarly contributions have garnered significant recognition.
His research expertise spans perinatal epidemiology, maternal and child health, sexual and reproductive health, global health, quality of care, health services research, and health systems. Professor Tessema's work has attracted substantial media coverage from major outlets including BBC News, The Guardian, and ABC News, demonstrating the public health significance of his research. His studies often utilize large population datasets from Australia and low- and middle-income countries, with particular focus on demographic and health survey data.
Professor Tessema has secured over $3 million in competitive research funding as Chief Investigator, including an NHMRC Emerging Leadership (EL1) grant to develop risk prediction models for preventing adverse perinatal outcomes. His research methodology frequently employs advanced epidemiological techniques, data linkage studies, and systematic reviews with meta-analyses.

He is also the founding president of the Australian-based Ethiopian Researchers Network and previously served on the executive committee of the Health Services Research Association of Australia and New Zealand (2022-2024).
