Gilbert S. Omenn is the Harold T. Shapiro Distinguished University Professor of Medicine at the University of Michigan, holding joint appointments in Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics, Internal Medicine, Human Genetics, and the School of Public Health. He previously served as Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs (1997–2002) and Dean of the School of Public Health (1982–1997) at the University of Washington. His research focuses on proteogenomics of cancers, eco-genetics, and the Human Proteome Project (HPP), leading global initiatives through HUPO. He co-founded the 4CE consortium for analyzing electronic health records during the pandemic. Omenn earned a B.A. from Princeton, M.D. from Harvard Medical School, and Ph.D. in genetics from the University of Washington.
His research interests include proteogenomics of alternative splicing in cancers, biomarker discovery, and science-based risk analysis. He has authored over 700 publications and received prestigious awards, including membership in the U.S. National Academy of Medicine and the Catherine E. Costello Lifetime Achievement Award. He is affiliated with the Rogel Cancer Center, Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, and the Center for Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics.
Key achievements include honorary faculty positions at Peking Union Medical College and the Institute for Systems Biology. He has advised at the White House level and chairs global proteomics initiatives. Recent work explores AI applications in medical records analysis and machine learning-driven drug efficacy prediction.
