Peter Horvatovich is a Full Professor in Computational Mass Spectrometry and Head of the Department of Analytical Biochemistry at the University of Groningen. He holds affiliations with the Groningen Research Institute of Pharmacy (GRIP) and leads the Interfaculty Mass Spectrometry Center. His roles include Secretary General of the Chromosome-Centric Human Proteome Project (C-HPP) and PI for Chromosome 5 research, as well as Program Leader of the Medicinal Chemistry and Bioanalysis (MCB) program.
Education: PhD in Analytical Chemistry (2001, Louis Pasteur University & Szent István University), MSc in Physical Chemistry (1997, Louis Pasteur University), and BSc in Environmental Analytical Chemistry (1996, Eötvös Loránd University).
Research focuses on computational mass spectrometry, proteogenomics, and biomarker discovery. Key areas include data integration for LC-MS-based proteomics, cancer biomarkers (e.g., melanoma), and extracellular matrix analysis in COPD. He develops tools like PASTAQ for MS data quantification and collaborates on projects like the European Cancer Moonshot Lund Center.
Teaching includes biostatistics and proteomics courses for pharmacy and master’s students. He supervises PhD and master’s students in proteomics, bioinformatics, and analytical chemistry. Notable projects involve lung tissue proteogenomics, head/neck cancer protein profiling, and chemoproteomic studies of glycation end-products.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Horvatovich Lab, collaborates with the European Cancer Moonshot Lund Center, and manages the Interfaculty Mass Spectrometry Core Facility. Active in open-source software development (GitHub: HorvatovichLab).
