Geoff Gilbert is the Sérgio Vieira de Mello Professor of International Human Rights & Humanitarian Law at the University of Essex's Essex Law School and Human Rights Centre. He holds advanced degrees including an LL.B. (Leicester), LL.M. and SJD (Virginia), and is a Barrister-at-Law (Middle Temple). Since 2024, he serves as Senior Adviser on Protection Policy and Legal Advice to UNHCR's Division of International Protection.
His research focuses on forced displacement, international criminal law, and human rights interoperability. Key areas include refugee protection frameworks, climate-induced migration, exclusion clauses in asylum law, and the intersection of rule of law with humanitarian crises. His work emphasizes practical solutions for durable refugee outcomes.
Gilbert's publications consistently address emerging challenges in refugee law, with recent work analyzing climate displacement, pandemic impacts on refugees, and UNHCR's operational frameworks. His scholarship demonstrates a trend toward interdisciplinary solutions in complex humanitarian emergencies.
