Cleo Hansen-Lohrey is a Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Tasmania's Faculty of Law, part of the College of Arts, Law and Education. She coordinates administrative law and civil procedure units in the undergraduate law program and leads the Law Honours Program. Her research focuses on international and regional refugee law, human rights, treaty interpretation, and climate displacement. She is a founding member of the Rights, International and Public Law Forum and co-convenor of the International Law Discussion Group. Cleo holds a Master of Public and International Law (University of Melbourne, 2015) and dual Bachelor of Arts/Laws degrees (University of Tasmania, 2006). She previously worked as a Senior Legal Officer in Australia's Department of Immigration and Border Protection and as a Humanitarian Observer for the Australian Red Cross. Cleo is affiliated with the Tasmanian Refugee Legal Service and the Climate Mobility Africa Research Network.
Her recent work includes consulting for UNHCR on climate displacement under the African Refugee Convention and advocating for legal reforms to Australia's immigration detention regime. She co-authored an article in 2022 highlighting how proposed legislation could align Australia’s practices with international human rights standards.
