Dr. Gemma Horton is an Impact Fellow at the Centre for Freedom of the Media (CFOM) within the School of Journalism, Media and Communication at the University of Sheffield. Since September 2022, she has focused on media freedom and privacy law intersections, while also serving as Assistant Editor for the European Journal of Communication. Previously, she was a University Teacher in Communication and Media at the University of Liverpool (2019–2022).

Her research examines the balance between privacy rights and press freedom post-Leveson Inquiry, with comparative studies across UK, France, and the US. She employs qualitative methods including interviews and document analysis.
Recent publications highlight her work on judicial discourses in UK media law and the impact of digital tools in academic practice. Her research spans legal frameworks, media ethics, and post-pandemic pedagogy.
