Irini Katsirea

Dr Irini Katsirea is a Reader in International Media Law at the University of Sheffield's School of Information, Journalism and Communication. She holds an LLM from the University of Leicester and a PhD from Magdalene College, Cambridge. Her research focuses on international, European, and comparative media law, with recent projects addressing media misrepresentation and fact-checking funded by the Gulbenkian Foundation and EPSRC. She is a member of the UK Government's DCMS College of Experts and has served as a Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies.

Key research areas include press regulation, digital media policy, and public service broadcasting. She teaches media law modules and oversees MA dissertation work. Notable publications include Press Freedom and Regulation in a Digital Era (2024, Oxford UP) and articles on fake news, search engine liability, and EU broadcasting directives. She currently supervises Wenqing Fu’s PhD on social media discourse around proposed US Twitter bans.
