Dr Sara Torsner is a Research Fellow at the University of Sheffield's School of Information, Journalism and Communication. She leads the ESRC-funded project Profiling impunity for human rights violations against journalists, hosted jointly by the School of Journalism, Media and Communication and the Centre for Freedom of the Media (CFOM). As co-coordinator of the Faculty of Social Sciences Early Career Researchers (ECR) Forum and co-founder of the Journalism Safety Research Network (JSRN), she bridges academic and non-academic stakeholders to advance the UN Action Plan on the Safety of Journalists. Her work spans qualitative, quantitative, and computational methodologies.

Her research focuses on systemic threats to journalism through state and market pressures, analyzing precarity and resistance strategies. She has developed monitoring frameworks aligned with UN SDG Agenda (Indicator 16.10.1) and conducted studies on online harassment of female journalists.
Teaching modules include Digital Journalism for a Global Society, Global Communication – History, Theory and Practice, and Dealing with Data: Statistics for Journalists. She supervises at BA and MA levels.
