Professor Gary Wittert serves as the Mortlock Professor of Medicine at the University of Adelaide within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences and Adelaide Medical School. He holds dual appointments as Senior Consultant Endocrinologist at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Director of the Freemasons Foundation Centre for Men's Health. His academic journey began at Johannesburg's University of Witwatersrand, followed by postgraduate training at Christchurch Hospital and Otago University in New Zealand, with additional training at Harvard Medical School and Oregon Health Sciences University.
Dr. Wittert's research spans five interconnected domains: (1) Peripheral mechanisms of appetite regulation including gastrointestinal hormones and gastric vagal signaling; (2) Weight loss interventions for obesity with endpoints in diabetes and cardiac function; (3) Testosterone physiology and metabolism relationships; (4) Obstructive sleep apnea epidemiology; and (5) Longitudinal cohort studies including the Florey Adelaide Male Ageing Study (FAMAS) tracking 2,500 men aged 35-80 years. His work has established MAILES (Men And Information, Lifestyle, Environments and Systems) as one of Australia's largest male health cohorts.
His publication record includes over 350 peer-reviewed papers focusing on obesity, testosterone, and metabolic health. Recent research trends demonstrate increasing emphasis on circadian biology, time-restricted eating, and the intersection of sleep disorders with metabolic diseases. The T4DM trial represents a landmark multicenter study examining testosterone's role in diabetes prevention.
